Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.3

Today marks the day that Apple has released the latest firmware for their newest operating system, Mac OS X Leopard.

The new update is firmware 10.5.3, the software update is not, however, as big an update as Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2. The new revision:

- Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras

- Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices

- Improves 802.1X (Wifi) behavior and reliability and when using Time Machine
- Includes fixes for Time Machine compatibility with Time Capsule.
The new firmware is available from Mac OS X Leopard Software Update.

Review: Apple 30″ Cinema Display

Yes people, it is that time once again. The time where I review a piece of technology that our friends in the technology business have produced.

This time, our topic will be the Apple 30″ Cinema Display.

Now this review will be considerably shorter to the my previous reviews, as I found that review too long to read.

So here we go!

Aesthetics – Now the overall design of the Display is something to be admired, Apple has done a terrific job on the aesthetics of the Display. However, a drawback I found was the cable management system. Apple’s claim to fame on this topic is that the display only has one wire running out the back of it, which leads to a considerably oversized ‘power brick’. I use the term brick as the power box needed is literally, almost as big as a brick. The ‘power brick’ has a few ports, one leads to the display it self, another leads to the power cord and the last port leads to all of your various inputs (USB, Firewire & DVI).

Functionality – After experiencing a few technical difficulties, I finally managed to make the display work. The functionality of the display is amazing, it works seamlessly with my MacBook Pro 15″ and responds to almost any command you make in the click of a finger, it is really, an incredibly functional display.

Summary – Overall, the Apple 30″ Cinema Display is not a bad thing to have in your technological arsenal, however, here are some suggestions from my self and colleagues to, hopefully, help Apple improve the 30″ Cinema Display.

1. Abolish the supposed ‘wire management’ system – the ‘power brick’ I mentioned in the Aesthetics category needs a serious ‘back to the drawing board treatment’. Dell’s 30″ display is more popular with users because it lacks the colossal ‘power brick’.

2. Price – Apple, you need to seriously lower the price of the 30″ Cinema Display, it is pretty close to three thousand dollars. Not to promote Dell, but their 30″ has the features the 30″ Cinema Display has (minus the ‘power brick’) & more, and it is almost AU $300 cheaper.

All in all though, the display is a pretty good device to have.

@ CeBIT

As previously mentioned, both Tom Baker (Editor In-Chief TB Tech Blog) and Tom Wilkins (Editor In-Chief MOT Tech News Blog) both ventured out into the world to visit one of the leading technological exhibitions/gatherings in the world, CeBIT Australia 2008.

There were many products at the exhibition, all with their pros and cons. Many companies that are yet to ‘come up on the media radar’ so to speak, were featured at this brilliant exhibit.

The infamous ‘CeBIT BloggerZone’ was back in action this year which has basically been identified as the Media Lounge, but with comfier chairs. Both Tom and I spent about half an hour to forty-five minutes in the BloggerZone chatting with the staff and browsing the internet on the free wi-fi offered in the BloggerZone.

Without a doubt however, the highlight of the exhibition was the world’s largest television, manufactured by Panasonic. The TV measures, diagonally, over 100″, making the picture crystal clear. However, a drawback of the TV on display was that there was very little if any information about this colossal device.

To sum it all up though, the exhibit was a thoroughly enjoyable & educational experience that will surely be re-visited by Tom and I next year, hopefully along with our colleague  Will Dawson who was, sadly, absent from the event.

CeBIT Arrival

As mentioned in a couple of previous posts, both the editors of the TB Tech blog (tbtech.info) and the MOT Tech News+Blog have now arrived at CeBIT Australia 2008.

The stands appear to be extremely vibrant of both large business and small business consumers.

More posts will be updated later on this evening.

Well, it is official, Apple has signed an agreement with Vodafone to officially carry the iPhone. Australians, our long wait for salvation in the form of the iPhone, is over.

Whilst Australia is going to be receiving the iPhone, several other countries will as well. These countries are the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey.

An official release date has not been confirmed this year, though rumors state that it is slated to be released later this year.

Apple Ideas

Here at MOT Tech, we have an open e-mailing service to any who wish to e-mail questions or suggestions.

Quite recently we received an e-mail from a particular individual who suggested something that many think would be a worthwhile investment.

The iTV. Now many have stated that when the word iTV is spoken, the person speaking means the Apple TV. These assumptions are, however, in many cases, wrong. The iTV is something that many have been talking about for several months now. The iTV is, as its name describes, a TV. Now if Apple made a TV then yes, the company would be venturing away from their more traditional Apple devices such as computers and iPods. However, the quality of the product in the opinion of many would be amazing as most Apple products are.

Even so, the product is a fabulous idea and should be explored by Apple, however, research on the internet has found no trace of a user-input department inside Apple, but hopes for one do continue to bloom.

iPod Dock

When I purchased my first iPod, a second generation to be precise, I purchased along with it an iPod Dock as there was no such device as an iPod *Universal* Dock at the time. The dock had been running perfectly, until about an hour ago.

The dock I had loved and used with 5 different iPods, electrically fried itself due to a short circuit in my electrical wiring. The dock took with it my beloved second generation iPod. Luckily however, my iPod touch was not in the dock at the time, (insured?).

Anyway, so like so many people today, I leave you tonight with a post of a more personal nature.

60 Seconds with the Elagato Systems EyeTV

Today, we picked up the main claim to fame from Elegato Systems, the EyeTV.

Now at first glance you would probably say, “Wow, this looks like a very interesting piece of technology!”. This is however, not the case for us. The antenna(s) that come with the eyeTV lack power and the ability to pick up complex signals such as HD Channels. Even when elevated to the maximum height possible, the antennas perform poorly. So we would suggest going out and purchasing a HD Television Antenna before you buy the Elegato EyeTV to avoid any disappointment after purchase.

Several other bloggers who are colleagues with MOT Tech also are in possession of an Elegato EyeTV and are suffering the exact same problem. Tom Baker, Editor In-Chief of the TB Tech News+Blog, purchased an Elegato EyeTV to immediately find he had difficulties connecting to channels or receiving a strong enough signal for several channels, both analogue, HD and digital.

So in our opinion, the Elegato EyeTV antennas need an upgrade or review by Elegago.
